Dennis Alan Barrett of Cañon City, CO (formerly of Columbia IL), passed away on April 2, 2022, after a long battle with cancer.

Dennis was born December 1, 1950, in East St. Louis, IL to Leonard & Agnes Barrett, of Columbia, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Brother Ronnie E. Barrett; Two nephews; James and Michael.

Dennis served in the Army from 1967 to 1972- 82 ^nd Airborne, 2nd Armored Division, as a Sergeant, then as a Sgt. Ranger with the 101 ^st Division where he served in Vietnam from 1971 to 1972.

After Vietnam, Dennis attended college, studying criminal law, and served as Chief of Police in Marissa, Illinois.  He then joined the U.S. Border Patrol (Douglas, Arizona) where he served for over 11 years.  Nearing retirement age for the Border Patrol, he transferred to the United States Penitentiary, Administrative Maximum Facility (USP Florence ADMAX – the only supermax prison in the U.S.) in Florence, Colorado as an officer, until his retirement in 2007. He had lived for many years in Cañon City,  Colorado, where he later retired, enjoying providing training classes in martial arts, rafting, camping and hiking.

He is survived by his brother: Edward L. (Peggy nee Reno) Barrett, of Troy, MO. Sister-in-law Mrs. Ronnie (Linda nee Griggs) Barrett, of Belleville, IL; Nieces; Dana Barrett, Sheryl Ragsdale both of Dupo, IL, Melanie Zoellick of Troy, MO, and Aunt Rosalie Sims, of Godfrey, IL.  He has many cousins in the Metro St. Louis area, California, and Alaska.

Graveside services and military honors will be held April 14, 2022 at 12:30 p.m. at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Glen Carbon, IL.  Sunset Hill Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
