Donna Sons, age 88, passed away on Thursday, February 2nd, 2023, surrounded by family in Collinsville, Illinois.  Donna was born in Steger, IL in 1934. She was married to her first husband, Don York, in 1953. A woman committed to her family, she cared for Don for twelve years after his early-onset Alzheimer's diagnosis.  They were married for fifty years, and had five children together. Devoted to doing what was right even when it was hard, Donna visited Don and fed him lunch every day before he passed.

Donna was an insurance auditor at a hospital in Chicago Heights, Illinois until she retired. One of her many stories from her time working there was when she had to hand the hospital bill to the mafioso who got shot on a golf course.  She was committed to treating everyone the same, whether they were Chicago mafia members or the neighborhood youth, who came over for pizza every Friday night.

A strong Christian, her love for Jesus strengthened and sustained her through the ups and downs of life.  Generous with her time and her money, she volunteered at and supported numerous ministries while also participating in Alzheimer's research projects.

She found love again late in life when she married Glen Sons in 2005. He preceded her in death in 2017.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and two husbands.

She leaves behind her sister, five children, four step-children, twenty-four grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, and countless in-laws.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 18th at Herr Funeral Home, 501 W. Main Street, in Collinsville, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Association in St. Louis or Sheltering Wings would be appreciated.
