Edwin Leo
Daum
Nov 14, 1920 — Oct 19, 2011
Edwin Leo Daum, of Tucson, Ari., and formerly of Edwardsville, died Oct. 19, 2011, in Tucson.
Mr. Daum was born Nov. 14, 1920 in Edwardsville. He graduated from Edwardsville High School in 1939 and joined the U.S. Navy soon thereafter. He was on board the USS Antares on Sunday, Dec. 7, 1941, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He later served on the USS Gunnell.
He married Melba King of Granite City on Feb. 24, 1945. After the war, he graduated from the Missouri School of Mines, Rolla, Mo., now Missouri University of Science and Technology, with a degree in electrical engineering. He worked as an electrical engineer until his retirement in 1985.
Mom and Dad loved to travel with the family, taking us to places from the Smokies in North Carolina to Disneyland in California. Dad and Mom spent their retirement years in Tucson. Mom passed away in 2007. Dad was a lifelong avid reader and always was ready with an opinion about his challenging readings. Dad's last illness was very short. He crossed the Bar much as Tennyson wished for himself.
He is survived by three children: Bryan Daum (Elizabeth) of Tucson, Ariz., Keith Daum (Charlotte Goddin) of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Linda Furgerson (David) of Canton, Georgia. There are seven grandchildren, Andrea, Veronica, Christopher, Kathryn, Benjamin, Noah and Phillip; and one great grandchild, Cullen.
Services will be at Sunset Hills Funeral Home, at 50 Fountain Drive in Glen Carbon on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. There will be a viewing beginning at 9 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to your local literacy organization.
