Obituary

Eugene Mosley, 88, and a resident of Glen Carbon, IL for fifty years, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025. Mr. Mosley was a member of Greater New Hope Baptist Church in East St. Louis, IL under the leadership of Pastor DeRienzia Johnson. He was born on June 12, 1937 in Scooba, MS. Gene's mother (Mary Mosley) moved him and his siblings to East St. Louis, IL as a young child. He was a devoted husband for 41 years to his late wife, Elaine Mosley (d. 2004) and a loving father of Alesia (Wiley) and Derrick Mosley.

Gene's witty responses, infectious smile, and unwavering kindness towards young people was the perfect complement to his no-nonsense approach to living and succeeding in life. While volunteering with the East St. Louis Jackie Robinson Khoury League and serving as founder and manager of the renowned youth baseball team, Jr. Pros, Gene often openly shared his perspective on achieving success in life. Throughout the 1970's, Gene also drew upon his reputation as a respected IHSA high school football and basketball referee to impart his outlook on life to others.

During his time at Lincoln High School in East St. Louis, Gene was one of the best football players in the state under the guidance of renowned Coach (Lawrence) Simmons. He later achieved distinction as an NCAA national football champion and was a game ball recipient for his contribution to the University of Iowa's victory in the 1959 Rose Bowl, subsequently being selected in the NFL draft. Gene's professional career included 29 years with Ameren (formerly Union Electric), where he demonstrated commitment and excellence until his retirement in 1996. In retirement, he pursued his passion for golf, continued to appreciate competition, and enjoyed spending quality time with family and friends.

Gene is survived by his children, Alesia Wiley (Deane) and Derrick, his grandson, Seth, and siblings, Lonnie and Ernestine, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins from the McCall family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine (d. 2004), mother, Mary (d. 2004), and his devoted brothers, Robert (d. 2007) and Roy (d. 2023).
