Obituary

Evlyn McQuinn
November 2, 1935 – December 17, 2022

Evlyn Deloris McQuinn (née Hall) passed peacefully with family by her side on Dec. 17, 2022, after a long illness, steadfast in the belief that she now rejoins her beloved husband Harry and other loved ones who predeceased her.

Evlyn was the glue that holds communities and families together: a faithful, decades-long member of First Christian Church, Edwardsville; a loving and supportive wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and great-aunt; and a fun and cheery friend.

Evlyn was born in Cairo, Ill., to Teddy Noble Hall and Helen Scott Hall, the fifth of six children. After graduating from Cairo High School, she married Harry McQuinn in 1954. They moved to Edwardsville, Ill., and had two sons, David and Daryl, whom she adored. Evlyn stayed home until the boys went to school, and then worked as a secretary at Edwardsville Junior High School. While working and taking care of her family, she earned both bachelor's and master's degrees from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and then became a special needs reading teacher at Nelson, Columbus and LeClaire schools, with a special interest in helping students with dyslexia.

In retirement, Evlyn and Harry enjoyed winters at their condo in Fort Myers, Fla.; cruises with their sons and daughters-in-law to celebrate milestone anniversaries; reunions with extended family; and frequent get-togethers with family and friends. She was a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship group at church; a longtime volunteer at Edwardsville Public Library; and a talented crafter throughout her life—she crocheted or knitted literally thousands of baby hats and blankets that were donated for newborns. She especially enjoyed time spent with her special groups of friends, the PIGGS and Butterflies, and her many other church friends, who were like extended family to her.

Evlyn leaves to mourn her sons and daughters-in-law, David (Lynne) and Daryl (Liz); her four grandsons and their spouses, Michael (Allison), Andrew, Ryan (Sarah) and Matthew; great-grandchildren, Felix, Nolan, Carson and Piper; sisters Alma Fussell and Carolyn Case; brother Benard Hall; numerous much loved nieces and nephews; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years; her parents; her brother, Carl Hall, and sister, Gladys Purkel; in-laws Eleanor Hall, Bill Fussell, Bill Purkel, Martha Hall and John Case; and nieces Sharrey Case and Shirley Greathouse.

Visitation for Evlyn will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27 at First Christian Church , 310 S. Main Street, Edwardsville, with funeral services at 11 a.m. and fellowship at the church following the service. Entombment at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates Cemetery will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to First Christian Church, Edwardsville, or the Alzheimer's Association. She'd also really like it if you took some time to read a book with your child, grandchild or young friend.
