Harold E. Rich

Harold E. Rich, 94, of Glen Carbon, Ill., passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at Meridian Village in Glen Carbon, Ill. Harold was born in Carbondale, Ill., on May 16, 1922, the son of the late Edgar and Mona Mearle, nee Johnson, Rich. He was also preceded by his wife Marilyn Nadine, nee Calvin, Rich whom he married on September 13, 1945, and one brother Glenn.

Harold was a brakeman from 1942-1946 for the Illinois Central Railroad, from 1943-1945 he served his country as a Seargent in the U.S. Army Engineers, later worked with the operating engineers from 1947-1962 with Shell Oil Co. and from 1964-1975 a teacher in the audio visual department at Roxana Junior/Senior High School. From 1975-1976 he was a media specialist at Lewis and Clark Community College and from 1977-1999 was a self-employed home builder.

Harold was an active member of the St John United Methodist Church in Edwardsville where he served on the Board of Trustees and assisted in Mission projects. He received his Master''s Degree from SIU-E specializing in Education and Media. He also served on committees for the Operating Engineers Union, Illinois Retired Teachers Association, Life member of National and Illinois Education Association and Southern Illinois University Alumni.

Harold is survived by his son Mark (Pam Neuenschwander) Rich of Glen Carbon, Ill and his daughter Leanne (Pat) Jones of Troy, Ill.; two grandchildren, Craig and Michelle Rich; two great grandchildren, Calvin and Amelia; sister-in-law, Dolores Rich of DuQuoin, Ill.; nieces Linda Swinford, Diana Cain, Sherri McAnerny; nephews Steve, Tim and Terry.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday February 19, 2017, at Sunset Hill Funeral Home, 50 Fountain Dr. Glen Carbon, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services for Harold will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 20, 2017, at St. John's United Methodist Church Edwardsville, located at 7372 Marine Road, Edwardsville, Ill., with Rev. Troy Benton officiating. Burial to follow at Rose Lawn Cemetery, Bethalto, Ill.
