August 29, 1926 – December 22, 2021
Howard L. Klaus, 95 of Glen Carbon, IL, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at
Eden Village.
Howard was born August 29, 1926 in Carlinville, IL, the third child of Paul and Alma (Lehmann) Klaus.
On October 28, 1950, he married Betty E. Barks of Granite City, IL. Howard and Betty were blessed with
two sons.
Howard was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a
veteran of the U.S. Infantry, serving in World War II. During his service to our country, he spent time in
the Marshall Islands and Philippines where he served in the Quartermaster Corp. Howard was proud to
have served our country in World War II and wore his Veteran cap daily. On August 25, 2015, in
acknowledgement of his service in World War II, Howard was selected and given the opportunity to take
a Land of Lincoln Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to visit the World War II Memorial and other historic
sites.
He worked at the U.S. Army Troops – Support and Aviation Command for 37 years and retired at the age
of 55. After retirement, Howard enjoyed spending the Winter months with his bride in southern Texas
and traveling, especially cruise vacations. Notably, Howard and Betty loved to dance and did so even
into later years at the admiration of the nursing home health care staff. He enjoyed making wood
carvings, fishing, camping, playing dominoes and pinochle, spending time with family, and firing up the
grill.
Howard was a member of the Edwardsville Masonic Triple Lodge #835 AF & AM, American Legion Post
No. 199, and International Order of DeMolay where he received the Legion of Honor. He was also a
member of Eden United Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Alma Klaus; his son Brian W. (and daughter-in-law
Evelyn (Nochta)) Klaus; great-grandson Gregory Sill; and brother Raymond Klaus and sister Martha
(Klaus) Wyzard.
Howard is survived by his wife, Betty; son Gregory (Janet) Klaus of Troy, IL; grandchildren Emily (Barrett)
Sill of Troy, IL, Melissa (Barry) Erb of Alhambra, IL, Erin (Shawn) Dunn of Troy, IL, and Bradley Klaus of
Glen Carbon, IL; and great-grandchildren Hunter and Keaton Erb, Victoria, Gabriel, Lucas and Anna Sill,
and Shawn and Wesley Dunn. Also surviving are two sisters, Pauline (Klaus) Squires and Marjorie (Klaus)
Foret.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Disabled American Veterans
or Eden Village.
Friends may visit on Thursday, December 30 th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. at the Sunset Hill Funeral Home. A memorial service officiated
by Pastor John Roberts will be held at 12:00. Interment will be in Sunset Hills Memorial Estates
Cemetery in Edwardsville, IL.
