IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jewell Josephine
Daugherty
January 3, 1925 – October 23, 2024
Jewell Josephine Daugherty, age 99, passed away on October 23, 2024, at her home in Glen Carbon, Illinois. Jewell was born in Barnett, Missouri on January 3rd, 1925.
Later, the family moved to Eldon, Missouri where Jewell attended school and went to the Christian Church. During the depression, when Jewell was a teenager, she worked as a waitress in Eldon and said that if she received a penny or a nickel tip, she felt rich.
Later on, Jewell went to beauty college and after receiving her license, worked as a hairdresser in Eldon and later in Collinsville, and Caseyville, Illinois. At the start of WWII, Jewell became one of the many women at that time often referred to as "Rosie the Riveter", working the engine factory at Curtis Wright in Kansas City, Missouri. Jewell loved to sew and was a talented seamstress. She had a beautiful singing voice and sometimes would perform with her brother, Edsel, on stage.
On May 12, 1944, Jewell married Clarence Len "Rusty" Brockman. For a while, the couple managed the Eldon Golf Course. They had a son, Jerry Lynn Brockman, who died as an infant. Their son, Carrell Rex Brockman, was born on September 9th, 1945.
On January 6th, 1968, Jewell married Sidney Daugherty. The couple lived in Edwardsville, Illinois and for a time raised bees and sold honey. They had a houseboat on the Mississippi and loved to go fishing. They took fishing trips to the Grafton, Illinois area and to Panama City, Florida. Sid died on December 9th, 1992. Jewell later moved to Glen Carbon, Illinois.
Jewell and longtime friend, Leonard Cuchna enjoyed dining out and going to church together. They later became engaged but never married.
Jewell was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and tried to never miss their games on TV. She and her daughter-in-law, Kay, would don their K.C. Chiefs shirts and get up and cheer during the games. Jewell also enjoyed going to the "boats" and playing slot machines. She stayed active and was still driving at the age of 97, when she voluntarily gave up her driver's license. Jewell was so much fun to know and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Jewell was preceded in death by her parents, Ted and Minnie Beanland; her fiancé, Leonard Cuchna, her previous husband, Sid Daugherty; sons, Jerry Lynn and Rex; grandsons, Jerry Wade and Brian; brothers Leonard, Leroy, John Paul, Edsel and Howard Dale, and one sister, Fern Koleson.
Jewell is survived by one great-grandson Steve, and many other nieces and nephews.
