Obituary

Laura E. Marks, 98, of Caseyville, IL, passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2025.

Laura was born on February 2, 1927, in Wolf Lake, IL, to parents John Burris and Fannie Burris, nee Casey. She married James L. Marks on January 15, 1955, in Cobden, IL. They remained together until his passing on February 2, 2005.

Laura lived a wonderful life full of wonderful memories. She spent a portion of her childhood growing up on the family farm with her eight siblings. During the great depression, she spent five years working for the Forestry Service. After that she worked at the Anna Shoe Factory and spent many years working as a custodian for the Sterling Baptist Church - a church which was near and dear to her heart.

She could be best described as having a sweet, giving nature. According to her sister, Yvonne, she was the definition of a "perfect" sister. Family was of the utmost importance to Laura, as were her faith and the family dogs. In her spare time, especially in the later years, she loved to travel. Laura was also never one to turn down an opportunity to go fishing.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Fannie; husband, James; and siblings, Frances Mezo, Felita Hutton, John Burris, Mary Acklin, Stanley Burris, and Alice Acklin.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, James (Elaine) Marks, Sheila Gould, and Ted Marks; siblings Yvonne Burris and Charles Burris; and many more relatives and friends, including her beloved nieces and nephews.

A public visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at 10 a.m. with services to follow at 11. Visitation and services will be held at Sterling Baptist Church located at 9204 Bunkum Road, Fairview Heights, IL, 62208; where Pastor Ed Ingram will be officiating. Burial will be following the services at the Alto Pass Cemetery in Alto Pass, IL. Flowers may be sent directly to the church.

Memorials in Laura's honor may be made out directly to the Sterling Baptist Church or the Carmi Children's Home .

The family is being served by Herr Funeral Home, 501 W. Main St., Collinsville, IL, 62234.
