COLLINSVILLE- Mary E. Schwaegel, nee Hoffmann, 99, born on June 26, 1917, passed away on Monday, January 2, 2017. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Schwaegel, infant daughter, Mary, her parents, William and Lena, nee Catron, Hoffmann, three brothers Bernard, Leo, and James, and three sisters, Dorothy Hoffmann, Frances Waghorn, and Kathleen Pritchett, and son-in-law, Michael Laswell.
She is survived by her children, Sharon Laswell, Joseph (Leonila) Schwaegel, Edward (Margaret) Schwaegel, and Janet (Alan) Dissler; grandchildren, James, Analyn, Mindy, Joel, and Alicia; great-granchildren, Dylan, Alexia, and Jaimie; sisters, Theresa (Joseph) Siegel, Gertrude (Marcel) Gebhart; brother, Lawrence Hoffmann; sister-in-laws, Josephine Hoffmann, Lucy Weissert, Rita Haukapp, and Marian (Stanley) Bossler.
She was born in East St. Louis and attended Holy Angels School. In 1930, she moved to Collinsville where she graduated from SS. Peter & Paul. She worked as a seamstress for Martha Manning (formerly Forrest City) in Collinsville and then for Irene Karol in St. Louis.
She married Henry E. Schwaegel of Lebanon, Ill. on October 31, 1944 and retired in 1949 to raise a family. Her significant seamstress skills were enjoyed by many family and friends. Mary and Hank enjoyed gardening and even sold strawberries and raspberries. Her flower garden brought color to her neighborhood. She was a talented baker and cake decorator. She made cakes for birthdays, graduations, and weddings. She was an assistant 4-H leader for the Collinsville Colonettes, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, SS. Peter & Paul bingo, and Heart Fund, and was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Legion of Mary.

Visitation: A visitation for Mary will be held on Friday, January 6, 2017, from 4:00 P.M.- 8:00 P.M. at Herr Funeral Home in Collinsville, Ill. and an hour prior to the funeral service at church on Saturday.
Funeral: A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Collinsville. Fr. John Beveridge will officiate. Interment will be at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Collinsville.
