Melvin J. Smith, 85, passed away peacefully at his residence in Collinsville, IL, on April 24th, 2025.

Melvin was born in St. Louis, MO, on May 16, 1939 to parents Melvin E. Smith and Anna Marie (Klima) Smith. After graduating high school, Melvin enlisted with the United States Army. He was a lumber cutter for Central Hardware until they closed their doors, then he began working at Sam's Club in the maintenance department, where he stayed employed for 24 years.

He loved being outdoors, whether it be hunting and fishing or just spending time with his family in nature. He enjoyed building items with his grandson. He was also a huge animal lover, having had a wide variety of pets throughout his lifetime. Including dogs, cats, hedgehogs, snakes, turtles, and birds. He was a devoted member of the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, The Knights of Columbus, the Glen Carbon Gun Club, the NRA, the IL RA, Ducks Unlimited; as well as a supporter of the Special Olympics.

Melvin married Norma Jean Kalbfeisch in January of 1968. They had a loving relationship until her passing in 2019.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his brother, Frank Smith, and his sister, Pat Smith.

Melvin is survived by his daughter, Ann Smith, and his step-daughter, Toni Kalbfeisch. Also surviving are his grandson Steven A. Frisse, Junior, and his granddaughters Mystique Frisse and Sara Kalbfeisch.

A visitation will be held at the Herr Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, April 30th, 2025 from 5-8pm. Mass will be held at Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Thursday, May 1st, 2025 at 11AM.
