Mercedes G. Smith, 79, of Collinsville, Illinois passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2023. Mercedes was born in St. Louis, Missouri on October 12, 1943 to parents, Edgar and Gwendolyn (nee Berry) Wells.  She married Roger D. Smith on December 22, 1964, and together they built a beautiful life and family.

Mercedes was a retired civil servant and worked at Scott Air Force Base.  During her career, she worked in phone communications for the president and first lady, as well as during operation Desert Storm.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger D. Smith and parents, Edgar and Gwendolyn Wells.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Robert (Lisa) Smith, Angela (Ariel) Garcia, and Anthony (Leslie) Smith; four grandchildren, Sean Garcia, Olivia Smith, Brendan Garcia, and Grant Garcia; and siblings, Janet (Steve) Martin, Jimmy Wells, Roger Wells, and Dorothea (Paul) Shipman.

Services will be held at Herr Funeral Home at 501 W Main Street in Collinsville, Illinois.  Visitation will be Tuesday, January 31, 2023 from 4:00pm - 8:00pm.  Funeral services will be at Herr Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at 10:00am, followed by interment in St. John's Cemetery in Collinsville.
