Michael Joseph Butler, 78, of Granite City, IL passed away peacefully with family by his side on August 2, 2026.

Mike was born on February 13, 1948, in Madison, Illinois, to his loving parents, Robert and Millie Butler. He proudly served his country as a Military Police officer in the United States Army before beginning a long and dedicated career as an electrician with U.S. Steel, where he worked until his retirement.

After retiring, Mike embraced the things he loved most. He enjoyed spending time on the golf course with his friends and looked forward each year to their annual golf getaways. It was during those trips that he earned the nickname "Kong." Mike also cherished time spent with his grandchildren, Ava and Devin Butler. Whether he was having cold ones and playing golf, reading a good book, or listening to his favorite "oldies but goodies" music, Mike found joy in life's simple pleasures and truly cared for his family and friends.

Mike was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Jody Suzanne Butler, who passed away at the age of two; ex-wife and mother of his children, Cynthia Altenberger; and brother, Bob Butler.

Mike is survived by his son, Jay Butler, and also leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends, all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Mike will be remembered for putting others first, a steady work ethic, love for his family, loyalty to his friends, joy of learning new things and the countless memories he created with a sharp and witty sense of humor. His kindness and sense of humor will be deeply missed and forever cherished.

A celebration of Mike's life will be held at a later date. Additional service information will be announced by the family.
