August 9, 1930 – April 30, 2022
Paul L. Weathers, Jr., 91, of Edwardsville, Illinois, formerly of Granite City, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2022, 6:12 p.m. at Highland Healthcare Center.
He was the son of the late Paul L. and Louise (nee: Cannon) Sr., and was born on
August 9, 1930 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
He married the former Barbara J. Watkins on May 14, 1953 in Rossville, Georgia.
She survives.
He retired from Boeing Corporation, following many years of service at McDonnell-Douglas as a aircraft electrician and Tech Data Engineer. He also assisted in the wiring of the mercury Freedom 7 capsule that took the first U.S. Astronauts into space.
Paul proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, and later in the United States Air Force. He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 113 in Granite City, and served as a 21 year member and former chief of the Auxiliary force of the Granite City Police Department.
Photography was a passion his entire life. He was known to always have a camera at the ready. He also owned and operated Weathers Photography studio in Granite City in the 60s and 70s. He specialized in baby portraits and wedding photography.
In addition to his beloved wife of 68 years, he is also survived by:
a daughter and son-in-law; Sharon and Jim Commerford of Lakeland, Florida
two sons and a daughter-in-law; Roy Weathers of Louisville, Kentucky,
Brian D. and Pam Weathers of Granite City,
Two sisters: Linda Tolbert of Stockbridge, Georgia
and Myra Sherrill of Soddy, Tennessee
a granddaughter and her husband: Charli and Adam Trawick of Highland, Illinois
three grandsons: Jase Bennett and his wife, Katie of Edwardsville, Brian M. Weathers of Florissant, Missouri and Chris Langley of Belvidere, Illinois;
five great-grandchildren; August Bennett, Mat Trawick, Carter Trawick, Malia Smith and Tierney Woodrome, other extended family and friends.
Visitation will be on Thursday, May 5, 2022, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Sunset Hill Funeral Home, # 50 Fountain Drive, Glen Carbon, Illinois, where services honoring Paul will be Friday May 6, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Jennifer Glover officiating.
Interment with full military honors will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates.
Memorials may be made to the Illinois Patriot Guard or Disabled American Veterans.
