Penny Marie Freiberg, 74, of Collinsville Illinois, born March 5th 1949 in East St. Louis, passed away on August 20th 2023 suddenly at her home. Penny was the beloved Wife of 53 years to her Husband, Jan Freiberg; loving mother to her daughter Janice (James) McCallister; and incredible grandmother to Taylor McCallister and Tessla McCallister.

She was preceded in death by her Mother and Father; Louise Mathis and Charles E Riley.

After graduating from Collinsville High School in 1967, Penny accepted a position with National Stock Yards Bank of Illinois in the Transit Department. Two years later, she was promoted to Department Coordinator overseeing 15 employees. From there, Penny worked for Security Savings and Loan on Grand in Downtown St. Louis where she stayed until the birth of her daughter, Janice. Shortly after, Penny was recruited by her former boss to join him as a bookkeeper for the Embassy Food Group which owned and operated twenty-seven Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants.
Wanting to be closer to her family, Penny left Embassy Food Group and went to work for a young car dealer in Fairmont City in 1975 as a bookkeeper.  Penny was involved in virtually every aspect of Bob Brockland Pontiac Buick GMC since inception and held a corporate title with the company since 1977.

In her forty-plus years with the company, Penny was instrumental in not only day-to-day operations but long-term and strategic planning. Together with Bob, she oversaw ventures into several different automobile arenas: insurance, radiator repair, custom auto accessories, body repair and used car satellites. She was involved in the acquisition of a Delorean franchise in the 80's, a Daewoo franchise in the 90's and a Buick franchise in 2004. In 1996, she was instrumental in making the move from Fairmont City to Cahokia a reality, overseeing much of the construction detail.

Penny was a member of the GM Business Accounting Managers Council and received numerous awards for her accounting excellence. In addition to her automobile experiences, she worked side by side with Bob overseeing the development of several outside ventures including the development of Tee-Up Golf Center now known as Indian Mounds Golf Course located in Fairmont City and Fairmont Flea Market just adjacent to the golf course.

Penny was overjoyed in 2003 with the birth of her first grandchild, Taylor and then again in 2011 when her second grandchild Tessla was born. Outside of her wonderful career, Penny and her family were members of Good Shepherd Lutheran church in Collinsville and supporters of Holy Cross Lutheran church and school in Collinsville. Penny never met a stranger.  She loved decorating for the holidays and hosting Christmas for the families, cooking, traveling, hot rods, swimming, fishing, gardening, comic con, feeding the hummingbirds and the beach.  Above all, spending time with her family brought her the most joy.

Those left to cherish her memory include her Husband, Jan Freiberg, her daughter, Janice (James) McCallister, Grandchildren, Taylor and Tessla McCallister; Brothers John "Sonny" Wright (Janice), Charles "Chuck" Edgar Riley II (Kathy) and her many nieces and nephews; aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Services for Penny will be held at Herr Funeral Home, 501 W Main Street, Collinsville, Illinois on Monday, August 28th, 2023. Visitation will be held from 10am - 12pm with a funeral service to follow, officiated by Pastor Kyle Wright.  A private burial will take place at St. John's Cemetery Collinsville.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Penny's honor to Holy Cross Lutheran church and school in Collinsville.
