Surrounded by his family, Richard Raymond Thompson passed from this life into his new heavenly home on Monday, December 22, 2020.
Richard (Dick) was born on March 4, 1941 in Jerseyville to Ray and Ruby (Starkey) Thompson, who lived in Alton. Dick graduated from Alton High School in 1959. He attended Central Bible College, and then transferred to SIUE, where he earned a business degree.
Dick married his wife of 55 years, Carole Rhoades, on September 11, 1965.
For the majority of his career, he was a financial planner and stockbroker, working for several brokerage houses and retiring from Regions Bank in 2012.
Dick served his community in several ways: as president of Easter Seals Society, board member of Germania Savings and Loan, president of Piasa Boy Scout Council, and president of East Alton Rotary Club which honored him with a Paul Harris Fellow Award. In addition, he wrote a financial column in the Alton Telegraph for 28 years.
He was a member of Wood River First Assembly of God church for over 50 years, enjoyed being a Royal Ranger leader, and served as a deacon for 32 years.
Dick was an avid deer hunter with his buddies at a family farm, an interest that was second only to his interest in his beloved five young granddaughters: Savannah Nitecki, Lily Thompson, Caroline Nitecki, and twins, Penny and Maggie Thompson.
He is survived by his wife, Carole, his daughter, Patricia (Noel) Nitecki of Edwardsville, his son, Matthew (Sarah) of Bluffdale, Utah; a sister, Mary Belle (Thompson) McGarvey of Alton; two brothers-in-law, Gary Oglesby (Judy) of Tyler, TX and Mark (Rebecca) Rhoades of Springfield, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Loretta (Thompson) Winslow.
Any memorial contributions may be given to the Missions fund at Abundant Life Community Church in Alton.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2020, from 11 am to 1 pm, with a Funeral Service following starting at 1 pm, at Abundant Life Community Church, located at 3986 Humbert Rd., Alton, IL 62002. Burial will immediately follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Glen Carbon, IL.
