Russell James Peters, 80, of Johnston City, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2026.

Born in California on April 8, 1946, and raised in Granite City, Illinois, Russ was the cherished son of the late Dorothy and Ralph Peters, and brother of Dennis Peters. He was the proud father of James Stotts (Michelle Orr) and loving grandfather of Owen and Willa Stotts.

Russ proudly served in the United States Army. He went on to build a creative life as a professional drummer and photographer, touring much of the country as a musician.

In addition to his passion for music and photography, Russ enjoyed golf, movies, and was an avid fan of the St. Louis Blues and the St. Louis Cardinals. Easy going and quick to make others laugh, he will be remembered for his sharp wit, wry humor, and a playful way of not taking things too seriously.

He will be deeply missed by family and friends.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made in Russ' name to the American Heart Association.
