August 18, 1937 – May 30, 2022
"Sang-Ki Kim, 85 of Collinsville, IL died on Monday, May 30, 2022 at
Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL. He was born in Daegu, South
Korea. The son of Kyusung Kim and Okjoo Kwon, his family lived in
Daegu, then Manchuria, and then settled in Seoul, South Korea. He
earned his bachelor's degree and master's from Seoul National
University in Philosophy after which he taught Philosophy at KeiMyung
University. He met his wife, Hung Soon, in 1962 and married her in
1965. In 1968 he moved to the US to attend graduate school at the
State University of New York at Buffalo and received his PhD in 1972
under Dr. Marvin Faber and Dr. Kah Kyung Cho. He taught for a year at
Brock University in St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada and then landed a
faculty position at SIUE in 1973. He taught at SIUE for 33 years,
retiring in 2005.
As a scholar, his interests spanned from German and Chinese philosophy
to anthropology, religion and economics. He spoke and read many
languages: Korean, Japanese, English, German, French, Latin, and
ancient Greek. He read broadly and travelled widely giving him a
unique perspective. Early in his career he wrote about traditional
philosophical topics, later he became interested in the economic and
cultural development of non-industrialized countries, and most
recently in the question of identity in the context of globalization.
He wrote for the JoongAng Ilbo from 1966 to 1968 as a reporter. He
wrote for the Cho-Sun Ilbo from 1984 to 1994 as an essayist and was a
contributor at the Dong-A Ilbo
Besides the life of the mind, he also worked with his hands. He was an
auto mechanic and a violin maker, a craft he learned under Doug
Bearden.
He is survived by his wife Hung Soon Kim, his daughter Susan (Sue
Young) Kim, his nephew Joon Il Kim, his niece-in-law Si Eun Lee, his
grandnephew Han Ju Kim, his niece So Young Kim, his nephew-in-law
Jeong Won Park, his grandniece Sang Min Park, his grandnephew-in-law
Dong Hui Koo and his grandnephew Sang Soo Park.
A memorial gathering is scheduled for Saturday, June 11th from noon to
3pm at the Center for Spirituality and Sustainability at SIUE. We
will enjoy music, share memories and light refreshment."
