Obituary

Shirley Ann Strader (nee Steinmann), 89, of Edwardsville, IL passed away on Monday, October 31, 2022, with her family by her side.  Shirley was born to the late Arthur Levi and Lily Bell Steinmann (nee Pannell) on July 22, 1933.

Shirley married first husband, Orville Combs, who passed away at a very young age on March 31, 1961.  She met and married her second husband "Gene" Strader on May 18, 1962 and were married for 46 years.

Shirley was an avid St Louis Cardinals fan and never missed a football game on Sundays.  Retired from Alton State Hospital where she worked until she needed to care for her son.  She was a volunteer with BJC Hospice.  Her favorite pastime was spent going to the family cabin, or as she referred to it "The Cottage" on the Illinois River.  Shirley loved the outdoors.  She enjoyed mushroom hunting, as well as quail and pheasant hunting with "Gene".  Shirley loved spending time with her family, especially at the cabin for fish fries, pig roasts and going to the sandbar.  During her leisure time she enjoyed collecting coins, antiquing, playing cards, especially pinochle, growing and canning her own vegetables.  She never knew a stranger and always enjoyed feeding those that came to her home.

She was preceded in death her by first husband Orville Combs and her second husband "Gene" Strader; a son, Mike Combs, her parents and four brothers Bob, Harold, Elmer and Bud Steinmann.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children Larry Gene (Sheila) Strader of Granite City, Illinois; Mark Alan (Monica Reznack) Combs of Edwardsville, Illinois; Connie Jeanette (David) Sales of Farmington, Missouri; and Kim Riggins of St. Charles Missouri; her seven grandchildren, Larry Gene (Debbie) Strader, Jr; Brandy R. McFarland; Philip and Apollonia "Polly" Dillier; Shelly (Rob) Doneff; Stacy Blankenship and Dalton Riggins;  nine great-grandchildren, Holly Strader, Maya McFarland, Nora McFarland, Brandon, Kaleb and Taylor Morgan, Raymond and Megan Kampworth and Daxton Riggins; seven great-great grandchildren; her sister Nila (Al) Schwegel of N.C. and a dear friend Jean Kuethe.
