Dr. Virgil A. Pinkley
Dr. Virgil Alvin Pinkley, 87, of Glen Carbon, IL., passed away on Monday January 22, 2018, in Edwardsville, IL. Dr. Pinkley was born on November 24, 1930, in San Bernardino, CA., the son of the late Alvin Pinkley, former Mayor and Founder of Costa Mesa, CA and Lucy Lucille, nee VonDrott, Pinkley. He was also preceded in death by one sister Bette Adrian.
Dr. Pinkley married his beloved wife and best friend Frances Clare, nee Railing, Pinkley in a garden ceremony in Woodland, CA. They were married for 65 years, traveled the world together and made life an adventure for their children and grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Dr. Pinkley is survived by his children, Virgil W. Pinkley of Glen Carbon, IL., Christie (Robert) Moore of Dayton, OH., Susan (Richard) Jung of Campos, CA.; grandchildren, Richard Grubb of Dayton, OH., and Kimberly Andrews of Springboro, OH., and six great grandchildren, Isabella, Juliana, Gabriella, Lila, Owen and Liam.
Dr. Pinkley graduated from the School of Dentistry of USC, University of Southern California. He went on to pursue a post graduate dental education at the Bethesda Naval Dental School becoming a board certified Prosthodontist and member of the American College of Prosthodontists. Dr. Pinkley proudly served his country for 26 years achieving the rank Captain in the United States Navy Dental Corps. He was an Assistant Professor at Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine prior to establishing a dental practice.
He was on the University of Southern California and Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego bowling teams during which time he bowled a 300 game. He was very active in multiple sports among them basketball, golf, swimming and track. He was a devoted father and grandfather with his favorite pastime spending time with loved ones.
Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association or the St. Louis Society for the Blind and visually impaired. Donations can be received through Sunset Hill Funeral Home, Glen Carbon, IL. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.herrfunral.com .
