Zennie G. Herring, 92, of Collinsville, IL, born May 11, 1926, the sixth child of Ollie Monroe Goldman and Ethel Mae Hicks Goldman of Rondo, AR, died September 1st, 2018.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan M. Herring, an infant son, her parents, four brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by two sons, Ivan Lee Herring of Collinsville, IL and John M. (Kim) Herring of Troy, IL; one daughter, Mary Carroll of St. Louis, MO; three granddaughters, Lissa Staley (Daniel Fogt) of Topeka, KS, Leigh Anne Staley (Eric Bailey) of Whitefish Bay, WI, Jennae Herring of St. Louis, MO; one grandson, Kris Herring of St. Louis, MO; four great grandchildren, Kivrin and Travis Staley of Topeka, KS, and Colin Staley and Emma Leigh Staley-Bailey, of Whitefish Bay, WI; one sister, Frances Comeaux of Vidalia, LA; adopted brother Kenneth (Brenda) Goldman of Lucedale, MS; sister-in-law Doris Goldman, of Natchez, MS. She is also survived by good friends, Pat and Dennis Staley of Glen Carbon, IL; Jeanne Vick and Margie Wright, both of Collinsville, IL.
Zennie taught elementary school at Webster School in Collinsville, retiring in 1987. She was an active member of Meadow Heights Baptist Church in Collinsville. She loved to sew, making dresses, doll clothes, baby blankets, lap quilts, and animal shelter cage mats, all of which she donated to various charities and organizations. She read constantly, volunteered at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, delivered meals as a long-time volunteer at Collinsville Area Meals On Wheels where she also served seven years as director, and served on the Madison County environmental educational committee. She generously shared acts of kindness throughout her life, as a teacher, a volunteer, and as "Nana" to her own family and to many others.
Throughout her life, Zennie was recognized for her contributions: awarded Collinsville teacher of the year and Madison County environmental teacher of the year; recognized by her state representative and had her name entered into the Congressional record for environmental activities planting trees and shrubs around Collinsville; chosen to represent Collinsville riding on a float in the Italian Fest parade; received award for 20 years volunteer work at Cahokia Mounds and recognized by University Women; honored by Collinsville Ministerial Association for work at Meals On Wheels; honored with a Community Champion Award in 2017 by Molina Healthcare for volunteer service and sewing projects.
A visitation to celebrate the life of Zennie G. Herring will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 10:00 A.M.- 11:00 A.M. at Meadow Heights Baptist Church, 1498 Vandalia St., Collinsville, IL 62234. A memorial service will follow immediately after, at 11:00 A.M. at the church. Memorial contributions can be made to Meadow Heights Baptist Church Building Fund or Cahokia Mounds Historical Society. Additional condolences may also be sent to the family through this online guestbook.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Herr Funeral Home in Collinsville, IL is assisting the family with arrangements.
